Ordering your meal in French

It’s time to order that food. Here are some phrases that will help you order food at any restaurant:

1. Je voudrais — I would like

2. Je prendrai — I will take

3. Je n’ai pas choisi — I haven’t chosen

4. Une minute encore, s’il vous plaît — One more minute, please

5. Qu’est-ce que vous recommandez ? — What would you recommend?

6. Quelle est la spécialité du jour ? — What is today’s special?

7. If you order a steak, your waiter will ask you “Quelle cuisson ?” (How would you like your meat cooked?)

8. Rosé — Rare

9. À point — Medium

10. Bien cuit — Well done

11. C’est terminé — I/We have finished

12. L’addition, s’il vous plaît — The bill, please

HERE LET”S PRACTICE ORDERING AT A RESTAURANT:

You will know how to get the attention of the waiter or waitress by addressing them as Monsieur or Madame/Mademoiselle, s’il vous plaît, instead of the outdated Garçon and Mademoiselle. And you can always just say: “s’il vous plaît”, while raising your hand to get waiter’s attention.

- Waiter: Bonjour Mesdames, Messieurs? Vous avez choisi?Are you ready to order?

- Marcel: Je vais prendre un steak-frites. I am going to take (have)

- Amélie: Moi, une ratatouille.

- Mark: Moi, le poisson du jour. Me, I will take today’s fish.

- Karen: Pour moi juste une salade s’il vous plaît.

- Waiter: Et comme boissons? What about drinks?

- Marcel: Une bouteille de vin blanc, s’il vous plaît. - Karen: Et de l’eau, merci! - Amélie: pour moi, une bière, une Heineken, merci! Oh non! Un jus d’orange, desolée! - Waiter: Qu’est-ce que vous prendrez comme dessert? - Amélie: pour moi, la mousse au chocolat. Et toi, Karen? - Karen: Je vais prendre la tarte au citron. - Marcel: moi, un café, c’est tout, merci! - Karen: Ah! Et un thé, s’il vous plaît.

- Waiter: Ce sera tout? Will that be all?

- Amélie: Oui, merci.
